How to Build a Spice Cabinet from Scratch

A well-organized spice cabinet is the foundation of flavorful cooking. Here's how to build one from scratch.

Most home spice cabinets are chaotic and underutilized. After years of professional cooking, here's my system for building a spice collection that actually gets used.

Start with Essentials

Every kitchen needs these ten spices: kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, cinnamon, red pepper flakes, and bay leaves. These cover most cooking needs.

Second Tier Spices

Once you use the essentials regularly, add: chili powder, cayenne, curry powder, turmeric, dried thyme, rosemary, basil, and ginger. These open up more cuisine options.

McCormick Spices are reliable and widely available. For specialty spices, Spice Hunter has excellent quality.

Organization System

Use consistent jars—spice jars with labels look great and keep things organized. Alphabetize your collection so you can find things quickly. Keep frequently used spices at eye level, less used items higher.

Storage Tips

Heat, light, and air kill spice flavor. Keep spices in a cool, dark cabinet, not above the stove. Use airtight containers. Write the date when you open a new jar—replace ground spices after one to two years, whole spices after two to three years.

Using Spices

Toast whole spices in a dry pan to release their oils before grinding. Add ground spices early in cooking so their flavors develop. Add delicate herbs like basil at the end so they retain their fresh flavor.

A well-organized spice rack makes cooking more enjoyable and your food more flavorful.
