The College Kitchen Starter Kit: Cook Real Food in a Dorm

Everything you need to eat well in college without a full kitchen. Compact, affordable, and dorm-rule friendly.

Dorm-Friendly Kitchen Starter Kit

You don't need a full kitchen to eat real food in college. With a few compact, versatile pieces, you can make meals that are cheaper, healthier, and tastier than the dining hall.

The Essentials (Under $150 Total)

Cooking

  • Electric griddle ($25-30) — pancakes, eggs, grilled cheese, quesadillas
  • Microwave (usually provided) — rice, steamed vegetables, oatmeal
  • Electric kettle ($20-30) — boil water for ramen, oatmeal, tea, pour-over coffee
  • Mini rice cooker ($20) — rice, steamed vegetables, one-pot meals

Prep & Serving

  • Cutting board — small, 12x8 is plenty
  • Chef's knife — Victorinox Fibrox 8-inch ($38) is all you need
  • Mixing bowl set — 3 nesting bowls double as serving bowls
  • Can opener, spatula, wooden spoon ($10 total)

Coffee

  • AeroPress ($40) or Keurig K-Mini ($80) — depending on your style
  • Insulated travel mug ($15) — for class

Storage

  • Glass containers (4-pack) — meal prep and leftovers, microwave-safe
  • Dish soap, sponge, towel — keep it simple

What to Skip in a Dorm

  • Full-size blenders (too loud, too big)
  • Toasters with exposed elements (banned in most dorms)
  • Air fryers (check your dorm rules first)
  • Anything that needs a gas flame

5 Meals Any College Student Can Make

  1. Rice cooker fried rice: Rice + frozen veggies + soy sauce + egg
  2. Griddle quesadillas: Tortilla + cheese + canned beans + salsa
  3. Overnight oats: Oats + milk + fruit in a container, refrigerate overnight
  4. Ramen upgrade: Instant ramen + egg + frozen spinach + sesame oil
  5. Microwave mug omelet: Eggs + cheese + veggies in a mug, microwave 90 seconds
