How to Organize Your Spices So You Actually Use Them

If you can't find it, you won't use it. Here's my system for spices that gets used.

A disorganized spice drawer means wasted money and boring food. Here's how to fix it.

If you can't find it, you won't use it. Here's my system for spices that gets used.

The System

Decant into identical jars - Consistent, looks better, saves space. All my jars match.

Alphabetize - Never search again. When I need cumin, I know exactly where it is.

Put frequently used front - Don't make yourself reach to the back for the things you use daily.

Label with dates - Know when to replace. Spices lose potency after about two years.

The Jars

Spice Jar Set with Labels - Affordable, consistent, looks great. About twenty dollars for twelve jars.

For a more premium option, the The Stone set at about thirty dollars has a sleek look.

What to Keep

Throw away anything over two years. Fresh is always better. Whole spices last longer than ground—coriander seeds beat ground coriander any day.

The Must-Haves

These ten spices cover ninety percent of what you cook:

Salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, cinnamon, bay leaves, red pepper flakes.

For the best flavor, I recommend McCormick Ground Spices—they're consistently fresh and high quality.

Organization Tools

A spice drawer organizer helps keep everything in place. The YouCopia StoraLid Organizer is great for managing lids.

The Bottom Line

This takes about an hour to set up and saves time every time you cook. An organized spice collection is the foundation of flavorful cooking.
